The start of the 2020/2021 school year has been different than parents, students and teachers had anticipated. Students will be learning virtually from home for a significant period of time, which will be a new adventure for everyone to embark on. Virtual learning can be challenging and adjusting to this new normal takes routine and discipline.

In order to help with this adjustment, we have connected with Andrew Mendivil, eCampus Distance Learning Coordinator to bring you the top five tips to help your family be successful while learning at home.
- Communication is key. Remember to look at the courses you are taking on a regular basis. Teachers will leave you messages that may be important to know prior to the next day’s instruction. Your teacher will connect with you on a regular basis and will have office hours to provide you extra support, when needed. If you need help, just ask!
- Socially distanced does not mean social isolation. Even though you’re doing school online, you are not alone. The district is providing a Student Support Line where students can call to get any help they may need. In addition, the first eight days of learning are focused on social and emotional support for students.
- Be consistent. Develop daily routines and a quiet workspace where you will not be distracted. Don’t just roll out of bed and get online for class. Learning virtually still takes preparation!
- Fuel up for the day. Get up early to be ready to go for your classes. Eating a nutritious breakfast will also help you feel more prepared and awake for the start of your school day.
- Preparation pays off. Online does not mean that you don’t need paper and pencil. Have the “tools” that you will need to help you stay organized and ready to take notes. Be sure to write down important due dates and prioritize your studying for tests and completing assignments.
This year will truly be based on how the student adapts. “Learning accelerates when the student, not the teacher, is taught to be in control of their own learning.” (Hattie, 2018). With these expert tips, consistency and a positive attitude, all students can be successful and have a positive at-home learning experience.
