Running season is in full swing and we are so lucky that Peoria has prime running weather. I, myself, just completed my first half marathon here in Peoria and I am a part of a local run club. Running, for me, has been an excellent stress reliever, an opportunity to get in the best shape of my life and enjoy being a part of a strong community of runners. I love completing races and having my husband and children at the finish line, more importantly, showing my young kids what they are capable of as they grow up.

Peoria is full of great running trails and paths that are right in our backyard. Even better, the City of Peoria hosts races constantly, which gives you the chance to have a fun physical experience without traveling far. If you are on the fence about participating in a community run, I would encourage you to do so! I have compiled a list of some exciting upcoming races to help you figure out which one(s) are right for you.

Arizona Road Racers Thanksgiving Classic

Do you want to stop feeling guilty about eating that second piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving? Register for the ARR Thanksgiving Day Classic at the Peoria Sports Complex on November 28, 2019. The event includes a 10 mile run, a 5K, a 1 Mile Fun Run, as well as the three distances for kids ages 17 and younger. There is truly a distance for all skill levels. If you are new to running, the one Mile Fun Run will be an introduction to this incredible sport without the pressure of a long distance. If you have kids under the age of 17, it could be a family event for all of you to enjoy together before you partake in all of the delicious Thanksgiving food later.

When you register for this race, you will receive a t-shirt, medal and the top three winners in each group will receive a full pie. The proceeds support the Peoria Diamond Club. For more information or to register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/AZ/Peoria/ARRThanksgivingDayClassic.

O.U.R. Phoenix Rescue Run

Another upcoming race that is taking over Peoria is the O.U.R. Run. On Dec. 7, the Peoria Sports Complex is hosting the 5K Run and Kids Run. The best part of this race is that 100% of the proceeds go to O.U.R, which is the Operation Underground Railroad. The organization exists to rescue children from sex trafficking.

With registration, you can expect a t-shirt, medal, and complimentary photos. There will also be a kids zone that is free for Kids Run Participants to enjoy. This is another race that you can enjoy with your family, and the proceeds going to an incredible cause.

Run Run Rudolph

On Saturday, Dec. 14, head over to the Peoria Sports Complex for the Run Run Rudolph Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K. This race takes runners through the Skunk Creek and New River Trail System. There is a distance for all levels, the 5k is a great starter race and the half marathon is an exciting race for more experienced runners. Proceeds from the event benefits Ryan House, which combines compassion with state-of-the-art care to guide children through life limiting or end-of-life journey.

Runners will receive a t-shirt, medal, custom event knee-high socks and awards for the top three in all age groups. Enjoy a pre and post Runner’s Brunch with bagels, Gatorade, fruit and water. Strollers and pets are welcome to join in on the fun.
